Range Rover v Audi Q7 v BMW X5 etc
Anybody owned any of the above? Pros/Cons. Looking to spend around 5-6k. Open to suggestions of other motors similar to above.

Re: Range Rover v Audi Q7 v BMW X5 etc
I had an X5, beast of a car and really nice.

Go for the 3.0d one if you get one. Range rover i thought was a bit sluggish although a nice enough car. Old man had a q7 and I perosnally didn't think it was of the same quality as the X5.

bmw have launched a new X7 which comes out next spring. but that is a bit more than 5 to 6k...

I've had the Range Rover Sport and X5 and I'd opt for the BMW all day long. Agree you should go for the 3.0D as the option. Good luck with that budget though!

My experience of ownership of Land Rover cars is one of very expensive upkeep, servicing and parts replacement is astronomical. IMHO of course.....

Had the Vogue, the sport, X5, Toureg and Jeep.

Loved the Vogue, if you get a good one they are great mine was Bobby Zamora's trade in so was well looked after.

The Sport was a 2.7 and it was a bit of a dog, nice to drive but it went wrong quite a bit.

The X5 was nice.

However the Toureg which is very similiar to the Q7 was the most car like - it was like driving a big golf.

You'll probably get the most value from the VW for what you're looking to spend - can get some decent Grand Cherokee's for your bedget - they will be more plasticy inside but they do a job.

TBF buying a £40-70k car for £5-6k I miagine comes with it it's risks - unless you are very lucky you are gonna be looking at some possibly big bills at some point and options or electrics which don't work great any more. I guess it all depends on how long you keep it and what you use it for.

Wouldn't bother with any of them with that budget otherwise you will end up with something with 100k's of miles and 15 years old.

Why not just go for a kuga or something like that and get something a few years newer and cheaper to repair/mantain. One quick look on autotrader and you could get a 7 yr old one for your budget vs minimum 12 year old on your suggestions.

Claroos shout for the Toureg would be a good move doesn't have the prestige name as such but VW are know for their reliability and initial outlay will be less for a newer vehicle lower mileage.

Expect to budget for around 100% of the purchase price in annual maintenance costs for all these shit kickers in this price range.

Don't do it... we had a £20k Audi Q7 and the suspension went, £3k bill, but fantastic car.

Now have a 3yr old Q7, no issues as yet. If you're going to get one, min spend £15-20k

I had a grand Cherokee and drove that into the ground over about 10+ years. It was great until about 100k miles then virtually everything went wrong, from the heads to the transmission, the works.

Have had a Q7 for about 80k miles. Great car. Very little wear. Not cheap to do anything on.

Got a new Discovery earlier in the year, which I prefer to all of them, but it has all the newer toys on it. Have to see how I feel about it a few years down the road.

Honestly I’d go for one of the German or Japanese ones with the more reliable history given the age.

I had a £2k Range Rover for 5 years. So long as you can keep the upkeep costs down you're fine.

My last two cars were bought for 10% of the original purchase price.

A 3k BMW 330 and a 2k Astra twin top.

BM broke down every 6/8 weeks , nothing serious , water pumps , power steering pumps and a coil from memory .

Astra went great for a year then threw an inlet manifold (common problem apparently)

1400 for a replacement engine.

Check the common faults with any second hand car and budget for it to fail.

On hindsight I would have not bought the Astra .
